Hattingen is one of the oldest municipalities in North Rhine-Westphalia and has a long tradition of manufacturing. The city’s history has left impressive architectural landmarks like the Isenburg Castle and Blankenstein Castle, and two medieval town gates (Weiltor-gate at Wildhagen and Baak at the Untermarkt). Modern businesses have set up their headquarters here because of the high quality of life, excellent transport links and the proximity to large consumer markets in Germany, Belgium and France.
A variety of different tax forms are available for taxpayers to file. The form you need to file depends on whether you or your spouse worked and how much money you made. The first settlements can be traced back to the Neolithic period. The name Hattingen comes from the Germanic tribe that settled the area in prehistoric times.
In 1554 Hattingen joined the Hanseatic League and became an important trading town. Its wealth grew with the development of coal mining. By 1720, there were 52 active coal mines within the municipal area.
In the 19th century, steel production took over as a major industry. The Henrichshutte was founded in 1853 and was the most important employer of the municipality until it closed in 1987. The city faces structural changes in the economy, but manages to overcome the crisis and establishes itself as a centre for tourism. Steuererklärung Hattingen
